Marriage Is Built One Faithful Choice at a Time

Feelings start a love story, but they cannot carry a marriage. Lasting marriages are built on commitment, sacrifice, forgiveness, and faith.

Nobody falls in love by deciding to. It happens to us. A face, a laugh, a conversation that runs past midnight, and suddenly the world has reorganized itself around another person. Emotion is the doorway into love, and I would never speak against it. God made us to feel it.

But feelings were never built to carry weight for decades. They rise and fall with sleep, health, money, and the mood of the house. A marriage that rests on them alone is resting on weather. That is why I say that marriage is not built on feelings alone. It is built on faithful choosing.

Feelings Are a Gift, Not a Foundation

Our culture tends to treat love as a feeling, and so it draws a very natural conclusion: when the feeling fades, the love must be gone, and when the love is gone, the marriage is over. Follow that logic and no marriage on earth survives, because every marriage passes through seasons when the feeling is faint.

Lasting marriages are built on something deeper. They are built on commitment, sacrifice, forgiveness, and faith. Each of those is a choice, not a mood. Each can be made on a day when you do not feel like making it. That is precisely what gives them their strength.

Four Choices That Hold a Marriage Together

  • Commitment is the decision, made once at the altar and then remade every morning, that leaving is not on the table. It turns a relationship into a covenant.
  • Sacrifice is the daily surrender of my preferences for the good of another. It is unglamorous, and it is the shape love takes once the wedding is over.
  • Forgiveness is the refusal to keep a ledger. Two sinners under one roof will wound each other. Forgiveness is what keeps the wounds from becoming walls.
  • Faith is the recognition that a marriage is held together by Someone stronger than either spouse. When both husband and wife are answering to God, they have a reason to keep choosing each other that does not depend on how either one feels that day.

The Quiet Battles

Marriages are rarely lost in one dramatic moment. They are lost slowly, through small resentments left unspoken, distractions that crowd out attention, and the gradual decision to stop choosing. These are spiritual battles as much as emotional ones. A covenant is a holy thing, and it has an enemy who is patient.

I write about this as a man who lost his wife, Nadine, in May 2025. I know what faithful choosing looks like across years that were not always easy, and I know that what carried us was never the feeling of the wedding day. It was the choosing.

Wherever You Are in the Journey

Perhaps you are preparing for marriage and want to begin well. Perhaps you are newly married and discovering that the first year is harder than anyone said. Perhaps you have been married for decades and want to strengthen what you have. Or perhaps you are a pastor or counselor who walks alongside couples in their hardest seasons. The principle is the same for all of you. Love begins with emotion. Marriage grows through commitment.

The Malgrave Letters About Couples, part of The Malgrave Letters series, approaches these quiet battles from the enemy’s side of the table, through fictional letters that expose how relationships, marriage, and covenant come under attack, and how enduring love is strengthened through intentional, faith-filled choices. It is available on Amazon and at major bookstores.

The strongest marriages are not the lucky ones. They are the ones in which two people kept choosing each other, one faithful choice at a time.
