There is a simple test for atheism, and it requires no laboratory. Watch an atheist at a funeral.
On paper, materialism is tidy. A person is a pattern of atoms. The pattern stopped. The atoms move on to become other things. Nothing has really been lost, because there was never anything there except matter arranged for a while in a particular way.
That is the theory. Now go to the graveside.
What Nobody Says at the Grave
Nobody stands beside a casket and says that the pattern has dispersed. Nobody comforts a widow by explaining that the atoms have been recycled. People weep. They protest. Something deep inside them insists that this is wrong, that it should not have happened, that the person they loved was not supposed to end.
I know that cry from the inside. I lost my wife, Nadine, in May 2025, and I can tell you that no part of me experienced her death as a pattern dispersing. Every part of me experienced it as an intrusion.
Wrong Compared to What?
Stop and think about that word, wrong. A leaf falling in October is not wrong. A star burning out is not wrong. Those are just things that matter does. If we are only matter, then death is only recycling, and recycling is not a tragedy. It is simply what happens.
Yet nobody grieves that way. The grief refuses the theory. And I want to suggest that your grief knows better than your philosophy. Grief testifies that persons are not patterns. It testifies that love was made to last. It testifies that death is an intruder in a world that was not supposed to contain it.
Scripture Agrees With Your Tears
This is where the Christian account rings true in a way that materialism cannot. The Bible does not tell you to calm down and accept death as natural. It calls death an enemy, and it promises that the enemy will be destroyed.
The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death. (1 Corinthians 15:26)
Your tears are not irrational. They are a true report about reality. They say that something precious has been violated, and Scripture says the same thing, and then goes further: the One who made persons will not leave the intruder standing forever.
So here is the test, stated plainly. A creed you cannot live at a graveside is a creed you do not really believe. Materialism cannot be lived there. Christianity can, and it is, every time a believer weeps with hope.
Your grief is smarter than your atheism. Listen to it.
