The Halo Was Never Evidence

The Dark Side of Darwin series ends with a verdict on the man, an honest word about what it does not prove, and a look at the trial still to come.

For several weeks I have been laying out the record of Charles Darwin the man, and I have held myself to one rule throughout: every item had to come from Darwin’s own hand or from his own family’s testimony. No hostile biographers. No secondhand gossip. Now the series ends, and you deserve a verdict stated with the honesty this page owes you.

The Record, Item by Item

  • A father who feared his son would disgrace the family, in words the son himself chose to preserve.
  • A failed medical student and an indifferent theology graduate who never held a degree in science.
  • A famous book whose full title, now routinely amputated, spoke of favoured races.
  • A second book that ranked living peoples beside the gorilla and forecast their extermination with the words ‘as we may hope’ attached, a view he restated in a letter months before his death.
  • A written calculation that a wife rates ‘better than a dog anyhow,’ which hardened into a published doctrine of female inferiority that he defended into his final year.
  • A paragraph on the perils of aiding the weak that his own cousin forged into eugenics, with Darwin’s printed praise, a road that ended at forced sterilization and the Supreme Court.
  • A censored and later recovered confession whose key word was not evidence but wish.

What This Does Not Prove

Here is the verdict, and I will not shade it. None of this, by itself, disproves evolution. Not one item. Character is not evidence, and I will never pretend otherwise on this page. A theory proposed by a flawed man can be true, and a theory proposed by a saint can be false. Ideas stand or fall on facts, and only on facts.

If you came to this series hoping for a shortcut, a way to dismiss the theory by discrediting its author, I am sorry to disappoint you. That is not how honest inquiry works, and it is not how I work.

What It Does Prove

But the myth is another matter entirely. The myth of the disinterested saint, the humble observer with no agenda who followed the evidence wherever it led, exists for a purpose. It lends the theory a moral authority that no theory has any right to borrow. We are invited to trust the conclusion because of the purity of the man.

That myth cannot survive its own primary sources. After this series, it should not survive your bookshelf either. The halo was never evidence. Now that it is off, the theory can finally be examined the way its author never examined his own prejudices: in the light.

The Trial Still to Come

The man has been examined. Now the evidence takes the stand. Starting next week I begin a new series, The Trial of Evolution, running to twenty posts. We will hold the fossil record to Darwin’s own written test. We will open the fraud file: the doctored embryos, Piltdown, a pig’s tooth, a glued-together ‘missing link.’ We will look at the 75,000-generation experiment and at the failed prophecy of junk DNA. And every bit of it will be sourced from their own literature: Nature, Science, and Darwin’s own chapters.

That is the standard I will hold myself to, because it is the standard Scripture holds me to. ‘Prove all things; hold fast that which is good’ (1 Thessalonians 5:21). Come and prove them with me.
