I hear it in classrooms, in comment sections, and occasionally across a dinner table: “Science has disproven God.” It is usually said with the calm confidence of someone stating the boiling point of water. So I have taken to asking a quick question in return. Which experiment was that?
Name the study. Name the journal. Name the year. I am not being difficult. If a result that significant existed, it would be the most famous experiment in history, and every one of us would know the name of the scientist who ran it. There is not one. And more to the point, there cannot be one.
You Cannot Disprove the Author by Searching the Pages
Here is why. Science measures the physical world. That is its job, and it does that job wonderfully. But God, by definition, is not a physical object inside the universe. He is not a particle to be detected or a force to be plotted. He is the Author of the whole system. Searching the pages of a book for its author, and then declaring that He does not exist because He did not turn up on page forty, is not rigor. It is a category mistake.
No instrument can rule out the One who made the instrument possible.
The Rule That Disqualifies Itself
There is a deeper twist, and I want you to see it clearly, because once you do, you will never hear the claim the same way again.
The sentence “only science gives real knowledge” is not itself a scientific finding. No experiment produced it. No study measured it. It is a philosophical assertion about science, made from outside science. So by its own rule, it does not qualify as real knowledge. The rule disqualifies itself before it can disqualify anything else.
Reading God’s Second Book
None of this is an attack on science. Science is wonderful. Some of the greatest scientists in history did their work precisely because they believed a rational God had made a rational world. Newton. Faraday. Pasteur. Maxwell. Kelvin. These men were not fighting science to protect their faith. They were reading God’s second book, the created world itself, confident that its Author had written it to be read.
That is the great irony of the claim I started with. Science cannot bury God. Every time it digs deeper into the structure of the universe, it keeps turning up His fingerprints: order where there could have been chaos, law where there could have been noise, a world that can be understood by minds that were made to understand it.
So the next time someone tells you science has disproven God, do not get defensive. Just ask, kindly, which experiment that was. Then wait.
